Artlas makes layered wooden world maps. Each map is laser cut, UV printed, hand finished, and boxed flat.
This one is cut entirely from birch. The layers are still 4, 8 and 12 mm, so the relief is unchanged — but with the colour taken out, what separates one country from the next is depth and the shadow it throws. The map reads quieter, and it changes far more through the day, because shadow is the only thing doing the work.
Birch is the palest of the three woods: a light, even, almost blonde surface with a fine grain. On a dark or a strongly coloured wall it lifts away sharply. On a white wall it sits soft and close.
There is no frame and no glass. Each continent mounts flat to the wall on its own, so the map takes the shape of your wall instead of a rectangle.
One wood, three depths. Birch at 4, 8 and 12 mm. Landmasses are spread across all three.
Real coastlines. Bays, inlets and small islands are cut as they are, instead of being smoothed into shapes that are easier to produce.
Cut to 0.01 mm. Laser precision, hand-finished edges, joins you cannot feel.
Names printed on the wood. Countries, states and capital cities are UV printed straight onto the surface — not stickers, not engraving.
Drawn from real cartography. Built on Natural Earth’s 1:10m dataset — the reference set professional map-makers work from.

Series
All three are the same build, the same coastlines and the same finish. The difference is how much is printed on the wood, and whether the map takes pins.

Continents only. No names, no borders, no pin holes.

Country names and international borders printed on the wood. No state names, no pin holes.

Everything in Navigator, plus state names, capital cities and pin holes. Country pins are included. Pin holes are cut into the top layer during production and cannot be added to the other two series later.

Size guide
The measurements below are of the map itself. There is no frame, so this is the exact wall space the continents take up.
| Size | Map, W × H | Inches | Min. wall width |
|---|---|---|---|
| S | 97 × 61 cm | 38” × 24” | 120 cm |
| M | 147 × 91 cm | 58” × 36” | 175 cm |
| L | 193 × 122 cm | 76” × 48” | 225 cm |
| XL | 244 × 152 cm | 96” × 60” | 280 cm |
Measure the clear width and height of your wall and allow a little space on all sides. Most people choose one size larger than they first picture.

Birch
Birch. The palest of the three. A light, close, even grain with very little figure — the surface stays calm, so the relief is what you notice.
Cut at three depths, 4, 8 and 12 mm. Every edge is finished by hand after cutting. No two maps are exactly alike, because no two sheets of wood are.
Which wall it suits. Birch carries best on a dark or a saturated wall — charcoal, forest, deep blue, terracotta — where the pale silhouette separates cleanly. On white or cream it reads as a soft, tonal relief; beautiful in raking light, quiet in flat light.
Also made in: teak · walnut · multicolour, which uses all three woods at once.
In the box
Fitting
Each piece goes on individually, working out from the jigs, so the map is built on the wall rather than hung on it.
In Pune we will come and install it for ₹1,000. Add it at checkout. Once your payment clears you will get a WhatsApp message to pick an installation slot.
Everywhere else you fit it yourself. The jigs and the printed guide are in the box, and the work is careful rather than difficult.
Before you start. The wall needs to be smooth, dry and sound. Not a wall with seepage, not fresh plaster or fresh paint, not a covered balcony or a bathroom. If you have booked installation in Pune and the wall turns out to be unsuitable when our team arrives, we refund ₹500 of the ₹1,000 and keep ₹500 for the visit.
It is fixed to stay. The adhesive is strong, and it is meant to be. Read the wall question in the FAQ below before you order.

Care
Dust with a dry, soft cloth. Never a damp one. No water, no solvents, no furniture polish on the printed surfaces. Keep the map out of long hours of direct sunlight, and away from damp walls and air-conditioning outlets blowing straight onto it.
Questions
Same cartography, same cutting, same depths, same build. The only difference is that every layer is birch instead of three woods, so countries are separated by depth and shadow rather than by tone. It is a quieter map, and a more architectural one.
Yes, but by relief rather than by colour. Neighbouring countries sit at different depths, so the shadow between them does the separating. On Navigator and Odyssey the printed borders and names make it unambiguous.
It is ready to dispatch in 3 working days, and reaches you 2–4 days after that.
The adhesive is strong, and it is meant to be. On wallpaper, or on a wall with thin or weak paint, taking the map off will pull the paint away or tear the paper. Installing it is a one-time job — decide the position before you start. We would rather tell you this before you order than after.
No. Each piece is fixed with strong double-sided adhesive and that adhesive is single use. An Artlas map is not made to come down and go up again. That is the point of it.
It is real wood, so it moves a little with the room. Keep it indoors on a dry, sound wall. Not a wall with seepage, not a bathroom, not a covered balcony or anywhere open to weather.
Real wood, UV printed and hand finished, fixed to the wall to stay. Covered by a 6-month warranty against manufacturing defects.
In Pune, we can do it for ₹1,000 — add it at checkout. Everywhere else, yes: the jigs and the printed assembly guide are in the box.
No. Pin holes are cut into the top layer during production and cannot be added afterwards. If you want to pin your travels, choose Odyssey.
Measure the clear width and height of the wall and allow a little space on all sides. Most people choose one size larger than they first picture.
Close, but not identical. Birch is a real wood, so grain and tone vary sheet to sheet, and on a single-tone map you notice that more than you would on the multicolour. It is the material, not a defect. Every edge is finished by hand after cutting.
It is drawn from Natural Earth’s 1:10m dataset, the reference professional map-makers use, but it is a wooden artwork. The smallest islands are not cut, because they would not survive as pieces.
Photograph the box from all sides before you open it, and keep the packing until the claim is settled. If something is damaged or missing, write to us within 7 days of delivery with those photographs and a photograph of the part, and we will replace it. Full terms on the returns page.
